Spain have secured a place in the World Cup final with a dominant 2-0 victory over France, and they now hold a significant advantage over potential opponents England: an extra day of rest. England must first overcome defending champions Argentina in the semi-final on Wednesday, meaning they will have one day less to prepare for Sunday's final if they advance.
Spain's Semi-Final Performance
La Roja outclassed France in Texas on Tuesday evening, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro scoring either side of half-time. France, pre-tournament favourites, failed to mount a serious challenge in what was Didier Deschamps' final match as manager. Spain have been imperious throughout the tournament, conceding just one goal in seven games en route to their second World Cup final appearance.
The Rest Advantage
Spain's semi-final kicked off a day before England's clash with Argentina, granting them five full days to recover. Former England goalkeeper David James, writing exclusively for Metro, highlighted the importance of this extra 24 hours. 'Spain have now got the day advantage. I think England vs Argentina is going to have a heavy physical toll on both teams,' James said. 'When you look at Spain versus Belgium, I don't think Spain were overexerted physically. They've got the extra day now having beaten France. I think Argentina or England will be registering their highest output in the game on Wednesday, so that extra day I think is going to make a massive difference – especially when you're looking at England with the likes of Declan Rice who has been suffering.'
Historical Precedent
History suggests the extra rest can be decisive. The last three World Cup winners all played their semi-final before their opponents. In 2022, Argentina beat Croatia on the Tuesday, while France beat Morocco on the Wednesday; Argentina won the final on penalties. In 2018, France defeated Belgium on the Tuesday, while Croatia beat England on the Wednesday; France won the final 4-2. In 2014, Germany thrashed Brazil 7-1 on the Tuesday, while Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties on the Wednesday; Germany won the final 1-0 after extra time.
England's Path to the Final
England must first beat Argentina in a brutally physical semi-final on Wednesday to set up a rematch of the Euro 2024 final, which Spain won 2-1. The Three Lions are seeking to end 60 years of hurt and avenge that defeat. However, the physical toll of the semi-final, combined with the shorter recovery time, could prove crucial.
Impact on Squad Management
James noted the challenge for England's coaching staff in managing player fatigue. 'It's how you fit them into training when you're having to rest most of the players for playing so many minutes. At the moment the balance has been spot on because we are in the semi-final, but that is a skill for the manager, for the coaching staff. But that 24 hours I think makes a massive difference.'
