In a dramatic qualifying session for the Qatar Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri snatched pole position after his McLaren teammate and championship rival Lando Norris made a costly last-minute error. The result sets up a thrilling penultimate round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, with the three title contenders occupying the top three grid positions.
High-Stakes Qualifying Unravels for Norris
The session was a tale of nerve and composure under extreme pressure. Lando Norris, who held a slender advantage heading into the final runs of Q3, seemed poised to secure a crucial pole position. He had earlier laid down an impressive marker, putting him just 0.035 seconds clear of Piastri, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen four-tenths back.
However, the British driver's challenge unravelled at the second corner of his decisive lap. Running wide, he was forced to abort his attempt, leaving the door wide open for his teammate. Piastri, fresh from a victory in Saturday's sprint race, did not waste the opportunity. The Australian delivered a flawless lap to clinch pole by 0.108 seconds, with Verstappen improving to take third, nearly three-tenths adrift.
A Session Fraught with Tension and Incidents
The pressure on Norris was evident even before the final phase. During Q2, he saw three consecutive laps deleted for exceeding track limits at turn 10, leaving him scrambling to secure a place in the top-ten shootout. He managed to progress, but the signs of a tense battle were clear.
The drama intensified in Q3 when the session was red-flagged. A piece of plastic broke off Carlos Sainz's Williams, bringing a temporary halt to the action and creating an anxious five-minute wait for the drivers. When the track went green again, Norris was the first of the contenders to venture out, but his challenge was over within the opening two corners.
The Championship Stakes and a Hamilton Struggle
The grid sets the stage for a monumental showdown on Sunday. Lando Norris can be crowned world champion if he outscores Piastri by four points and Verstappen by just one point. A victory would see him dethrone the Dutchman without facing a final-round shootout in Abu Dhabi.
The war of words also continued off the track. After the sprint race, Norris hit back at Verstappen's claim that he would have already wrapped up the title if he were in the McLaren. "Max generally has a good clue about a lot of things," Norris said, "but there is also a lot of things he doesn't have much of a clue about. It is also Red Bull's way of going about things, an aggressive nature and just talking nonsense a lot of the time."
In stark contrast to the battle at the front, Lewis Hamilton endured another torrid day. The seven-time world champion suffered his third Q1 elimination in a row, qualifying a lowly 18th for the main event. His first season at Ferrari continues to disappoint, with teammate Charles Leclerc qualifying eight places ahead in tenth. Hamilton looks increasingly likely to end the season without a single podium finish.
