Piastri Seizes Qatar GP Pole as Norris' Final Lap Falters
Piastri takes Qatar GP pole after Norris error

In a dramatic qualifying session for the Qatar Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri snatched pole position after his McLaren teammate and championship rival Lando Norris made a critical error on his final lap. The outcome intensifies the title battle heading into Sunday's penultimate race of the season.

High-Stakes Qualifying Drama Unfolds

The session reached a fever pitch in the final moments of Q3. Norris, who had held a slender advantage, was the first of the contenders to begin his last attempt. However, his lap was over almost before it began. The British driver ran wide at the second corner, a mistake that forced him to abort his run completely.

This opened the door for Oscar Piastri, who had already won the sprint race earlier in the day. The Australian driver did not hesitate, posting a time that secured him pole position by 0.108 seconds. Red Bull's Max Verstappen managed to improve on his own final run but will start from third, nearly three-tenths adrift of Piastri.

Norris's Nervy Path Through Qualifying

Signs of pressure were evident for Lando Norris earlier in the session. During Q2, he saw three consecutive lap times deleted for exceeding track limits at turn 10. This left him scrambling to set a clean time to progress into the top-ten shootout, a feat he managed at the very last moment.

Once in Q3, Norris initially laid down a strong marker, going 0.035 seconds faster than Piastri. The session was then red-flagged due to a piece of plastic coming off Carlos Sainz's Williams, creating an anxious five-minute wait before the final runs decided the grid.

The tension was compounded by a war of words with Verstappen. After the sprint race, Norris hit back at the Dutchman's suggestion that he would have easily wrapped up the title in a McLaren. "Max generally has a good clue about a lot of things," Norris said, "but there is also a lot of things he doesn't have much of a clue about."

Championship Scenarios and Hamilton's Struggles

The grid sets up a tantalising championship battle for Sunday's Grand Prix. Lando Norris can be crowned world champion if he outscores Piastri by four points and Verstappen by a single point. A victory for Piastri would dramatically close the gap, setting the stage for a potential final-round decider in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton's difficult first season with Ferrari hit a new low. The seven-time world champion suffered his third consecutive Q1 elimination, qualifying a dismal 18th on the grid. He was nearly four-tenths slower than his teammate Charles Leclerc, who reached Q3, and a staggering nine-tenths off the pace in the first segment.

Leclerc has now out-qualified Hamilton at 18 of the 23 rounds this season. Hamilton will start the race ahead of only Lance Stroll and Franco Colapinto, looking increasingly likely to end the year without a single podium finish in Ferrari red.
