Mexico fans' disruption no match for Everton atmosphere

England security officials have downplayed the efforts of Mexico supporters to disrupt the team's preparations for their World Cup round-of-16 clash, joking that the atmosphere at Everton is more hostile. According to a report in the Mail, an England security official stated that many players are accustomed to hostile environments, quipping: "Sometimes the atmosphere at Everton is worse."

Disruption tactics outside hotel

On Saturday night, Mexico fans played music and set off fireworks outside the England squad's hotel in Mexico City in an attempt to undermine their preparations for the match at the Azteca Stadium. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the hotel before police and other officials pushed them further away and behind railings. However, the security official noted that the disruption had little impact on the players inside, including Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The official added: "They're used to playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona and the biggest Premier League clubs… This isn't their first experience of something like this."

Everton's hostile reputation

Everton supporters have long been known for creating a fierce atmosphere at Goodison Park, particularly during the final years at the stadium. Coach welcomes and crowd displays at the old stadium paved the way for memorable rescue acts and Merseyside derbies. Efforts included setting fireworks off outside the hotels of visiting rivals. Work is ongoing to replicate the best of Goodison at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
