In a stunning turn of events at the Hungaroring, the McLaren F1 team has shattered a long-standing record, amassing more points in a single race than any other team in the sport's modern era. The Woking-based squad's phenomenal performance has sent shockwaves through the paddock and firmly ended Red Bull's season-long dominance.
Lando Norris and rookie sensation Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass in Budapest, securing a spectacular double podium finish. Norris clinched a hard-fought second place, while the impressive Piastri crossed the line in third, marking his maiden F1 podium in only his eleventh race.
A Record-Breaking Haul for the Papaya Army
The combined efforts of the two drivers earned McLaren a monumental 39 points from the Grand Prix. This incredible tally surpasses the previous record of 37 points, a feat only achieved by Mercedes and Ferrari under the current points system. The result catapults McLaren into fifth place in the Constructors' Championship, signalling a monumental comeback for the historic team.
Red Bull's Uncharacteristic Struggles
In a race that defied all expectations, the usually invincible Red Bull machine showed significant cracks. Championship leader Max Verstappen, who started from a record-equalling ninth pole position, struggled for pace throughout the grand prix. The Dutchman could only manage a P4 finish, a massive 40 seconds behind the winning Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, had a day to forget, languishing outside the points and finishing a disappointing P17 after a disastrous qualifying session saw him start from the pit lane. The team's struggles were a stark contrast to their usual form, leaving team principal Christian Horner with much to analyse.
Norris's Bittersweet Podium
While celebrating his and the team's achievement, Lando Norris admitted to a tinge of disappointment at missing out on the victory. The British driver believed that a different strategy could have potentially challenged Lewis Hamilton for the win.
"It was a good day for us, a double podium for the team. I’m very happy, especially for Oscar. I think there was a possibility to challenge Lewis, but we’re still taking a lot of points," Norris stated in his post-race interview.
Piastri's Dream Debut Podium
For Oscar Piastri, the Hungarian GP marked a career-defining moment. The young Australian kept a cool head under immense pressure to secure his first top-three finish, a just reward for his impressive pace and maturity this season.
The result sends a clear message to the entire grid: McLaren is back as a formidable force. With their car development proving to be the envy of the paddock, the second half of the season promises to be a thrilling battle at the front.
