Liam Lawson, the promising New Zealand racing driver, has broken his silence on the disappointing news that he won't be securing a full-time Formula 1 seat for the 2025 season, despite his impressive performances last year.
Red Bull's Decision Leaves Rising Star in Reserve Role
The 22-year-old, who currently serves as reserve driver for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri, expressed his frustration at being overlooked for a permanent position on the grid. "Obviously, it's frustrating," Lawson admitted during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. "I feel like I'm ready for a seat, but it's not my decision."
Proven Talent Waiting in the Wings
Lawson's credentials speak for themselves. When Daniel Ricciardo suffered a hand injury in 2023, the young driver stepped into the AlphaTauri cockpit and immediately made an impact. His standout performance came at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he secured his first championship points with a remarkable ninth-place finish.
"I proved to myself that I deserve to be here and that I can do it," Lawson stated, reflecting on his unexpected opportunity last season. "That's the most important thing I took from it."
Red Bull's Driver Line-Up Solidified
The Milton Keynes-based team has confirmed that both Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda will remain with AlphaTauri for the 2025 campaign, leaving Lawson to continue in his reserve capacity. This decision comes despite widespread recognition within the paddock that Lawson has demonstrated the talent and composure required for a full-time F1 seat.
Future Prospects Remain Uncertain
While Lawson remains committed to the Red Bull driver programme, the lack of a confirmed seat for 2025 raises questions about his long-term future in Formula 1. The competitive nature of driver placements means opportunities are limited, and talented drivers like Lawson must often wait patiently for their chance.
The motorsport community will be watching closely to see if another team might offer Lawson an opportunity, or whether Red Bull will eventually promote the clearly capable young driver to a permanent position.
