Lando Norris secured his maiden Formula One world championship with a composed drive to third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen by just two points in a dramatic season finale. The McLaren driver, who started the race needing to finish ahead of Verstappen to guarantee the title, delivered a gutsy performance under immense pressure at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, with Norris's teammate Oscar Piastri taking second, but Norris's podium finish was enough to clinch the championship. The 26-year-old Briton, in his seventh F1 season, broke down in tears after crossing the line, overwhelmed by the realisation of a childhood dream. 'I'm not crying,' he said through sobs inside his helmet before embracing his tearful mother, Cisca, and his McLaren team.
Norris becomes the 11th British driver to win the world title, ending McLaren's 16-year drought since Lewis Hamilton's 2008 championship. The team also secured the constructors' title for the first time since 1998, completing a remarkable turnaround from their struggles in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings.
The championship battle went down to the wire after Norris suffered a double disqualification in Las Vegas and a costly strategy error in Qatar, where he overtook Kimi Antonelli in the closing laps to gain the decisive two points. Verstappen, who had trailed by 104 points in August, pushed hard but fell just short, finishing the season two points behind the new champion.
Piastri, who led the championship from round five until the Mexican Grand Prix, faded in the final third but impressed in only his third season, taking seven wins and earning praise as a future world champion. Verstappen, meanwhile, expressed no disappointment, stating he and his team gave their all in a fight to the very end.
