A fiery pit lane confrontation unfolded between two former Formula 1 drivers after a collision on track at the Milwaukee Mile. The incident occurred during Sunday's IndyCar double-header at the oval circuit in Wisconsin, when Mick Schumacher spun out after contact with Romain Grosjean.
The pair, both former Haas drivers in F1, touched when the front-right wheel of Schumacher's Rahal Letterman Lanigan car clipped the rear-left of the Dale Coyne Racing machine piloted by Grosjean, sending the German into a spin. Schumacher managed to get going again and finished 12th, but his annoyance was clear even after taking the chequered flag.
Pit Lane Confrontation Captured on Video
Footage posted on social media by IndyCar reporter Christopher DeHarde showed the end of a confrontation between the pair as Schumacher, standing over Grosjean who was still in the cockpit of his car, gestured angrily before turning to walk away. A second clip, later posted by the same reporter, showed the two talking face to face with helmets off, the mood between them much better.
Grosjean said he was trying to avoid a collision with Louis Foster when he cut across Schumacher's line and contact occurred between the pair. The German, meanwhile, was relieved to have not ended up in the wall and fumed: "The contact was insane. I've never seen anybody chop across like that before in my life.
Schumacher's Frustration and Recovery
"He's had experience with that in the past, which you would think somebody learns from it. I just think that on an oval like that, I mean, I've been told off for just running up wide, and somebody comes in and just chops across… I don't think that's quite racing."
Regarding his recovery after that, Schumacher added: "I drove with a lot of frustration afterwards, because I just thought that was not necessary, and frankly, just not good to race like that. At the end of the day, it's part of the learning curve. Luckily, we kept it out of the wall. Honestly, at some point, I thought I was going to hit the pit lane. Not amazing."
Contrasting Careers in F1 and IndyCar
Schumacher was the most recent of the two to race in F1, having spent two seasons with minnows Haas in 2021 and 2022, scoring 12 points in total. Grosjean's F1 career was much longer, the Frenchman having started 179 races with Renault, Lotus and latterly Haas, achieving 10 podiums and scoring 391 career total points.
He is also more experienced in IndyCar, having run 81 races over the last five years and achieved seven podiums in the USA's leading single-seater motorsport series. Schumacher, meanwhile, is a rookie this year with 17 starts under his belt and one top-10 finish to show for his efforts so far, an eighth place on the oval course at Nashville in July.
