Ecuador Manager Quits After World Cup Loss, Files FIFA Complaint

Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece has resigned following his team's 2-0 World Cup defeat to Mexico in the round of 32. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) also submitted a formal complaint to FIFA regarding off-field incidents before the match.

Resignation Confirmed

Beccacece, 45, announced his departure after the match, stating his contract ended with the World Cup. "Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don't think we were able to achieve the feat we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it's my turn to say goodbye," Beccacece said. He expressed gratitude to the players and staff, noting, "We built a family. We didn't achieve what I said we would, but I feel complete."

Match Details

Ecuador lost 2-0 to tournament hosts Mexico, with Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scoring first-half goals. Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was sent off in the 95th minute. Ecuador had been tipped as dark horses, featuring stars like Moises Caicedo, but struggled to advance after a narrow group-stage qualification. They secured a spot in the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams, following a win over Germany.

FIFA Complaint

The FEF filed a formal complaint to FIFA over pre-match disturbances. Fans outside Ecuador's hotel in Mexico City set off fireworks late into the night, disrupting the team's rest. Beccacece also reported that the team's flight and transport were delayed by three hours and 20 minutes. The FEF statement read: "Regarding certain off-the-field actions... the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent."

Beccacece's Tenure

Beccacece took over Ecuador in 2024 after managing Elche, Defensa y Justicia, and Racing Club. He led Ecuador to World Cup qualification by finishing second in South American qualifying, above Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay, conceding only five goals in 18 matches. Despite high hopes, the team failed to progress beyond the round of 32.
