Ecuador Boss Quits World Cup After Mexico Defeat and Late-Night Incident
Ecuador Boss Quits World Cup After Mexico Defeat

Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece has announced his resignation following his side's 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the World Cup Round of 32. The 45-year-old, who took charge in 2024, said his contract ended with the tournament and that he had failed to deliver on his promise of making this "the best World Cup ever."

World Cup Journey Ends in Disappointment

Ecuador entered the tournament as potential dark horses, having qualified as the second-best South American team—ahead of Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay. They advanced from the group stage as one of the best third-place finishers, thanks to a famous win over Germany and a goalless draw against Curacao. However, their campaign ended in Mexico City on Tuesday with goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez. Defender Piero Hincapie was sent off in the dying moments for covering his mouth during a confrontation with Santiago Gimenez.

Beccacece's Emotional Farewell

Speaking to Reuters after the match, Beccacece said: "Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don’t think we were able to achieve the feat we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it’s my turn to say goodbye." He expressed gratitude to the players and staff, adding: "I have gratitude — gratitude for the people, gratitude for the players who gave their hearts. This has been a painful evening but I leave with good memories of the dressing room tonight."

FIFA Complaint Over Late-Night Disruption

Ecuador's exit was overshadowed by off-field incidents. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) filed a formal complaint to FIFA after fireworks were aimed at the team's hotel in Mexico City in the middle of the night, disrupting players' sleep. Additionally, Beccacece revealed his side arrived at their hotel more than three hours late due to unexplained delays with their flight and coach journey.

The FEF statement read: "Regarding certain off-the-field actions that took place prior to the Round of 16 match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent. Therefore, the FEF respectfully calls upon the relevant authorities to pay closer attention to these incidents and to adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the integrity of our players, coaching staff, and supporters."

Legacy and Next Steps

Beccacece leaves with a mixed legacy, having built a "family" atmosphere but falling short of his ambitious targets. "We didn’t achieve what I said we would, but I feel complete. I know what we built," he concluded. The FEF has not yet announced a successor, but the search for a new manager will begin immediately as Ecuador look to rebuild ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
