Claire Williams Backs George Russell for F1 Championship Glory
Claire Williams Backs George Russell for F1 Title

Claire Williams, the former principal of the Williams Formula One team, has publicly endorsed George Russell as the most deserving candidate for a world championship title in the sport. Williams, who provided Russell with his debut F1 drive in 2019, described the 28-year-old Mercedes driver as a "real gentleman" both on and off the track, emphasizing his work ethic and character.

Russell Enters Australian Grand Prix as Favourite

George Russell heads into the season-opening Australian Grand Prix this Sunday as the clear favourite among bookmakers. His Mercedes team is widely expected to hold a competitive advantage over rivals including Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren, setting the stage for a potentially dominant start to the 2026 campaign.

A Journey of Resilience and Patience

Williams highlighted Russell's challenging career path, noting that he joined Williams during a difficult period for the team before securing a move to Mercedes as their dominance began to wane. "George has always had a world championship in him," Williams told the Press Association. "It has been a long and arduous road to get to a point where he is fully in contention, but in my mind, nobody would deserve it more."

She elaborated on how Russell's early struggles built essential resilience: "I always said to him: 'Hopefully this will provide you with some real experience and resilience for the really challenging times to come when you need to dig deep to win races and win world championships.'"

Proven Performance and Professionalism

Despite joining Mercedes during a transitional phase, Russell has impressed by outscoring seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in two of their three seasons together. Last season, he was the only driver outside the primary title contenders – Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri – to secure a race victory, demonstrating his capability at the highest level.

Williams praised Russell's professional demeanor: "He was such a joy. There are no sides to him. He never thought he was more important than anyone else just because he was the driver. The best way to describe George is that he is a real gentleman, both on and off the track."

Championship Prospects and British Motor Sport

With Russell now positioned as a championship favourite, Williams expressed excitement about the potential for a thrilling British-dominated title fight. "We could have George going up against Lando and Lewis, too – he is looking pretty strong in the Ferrari – for the title, and that would be incredible for British motor sport," she said.

Williams, who revealed she will set her alarm to watch the 4am UK time start in Melbourne, concluded with confidence in Russell's abilities: "He doesn't do distractions, he is really smart and he knows what he needs to do to win the championship. He is absolutely on a par with his peers and if he has the car beneath him, he is ready to deliver."
