Chisora vs Wilder Heavyweight Showdown Hit by Dramatic Glove Controversy
The highly anticipated heavyweight fight between Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder, scheduled for tomorrow night at London's O2 Arena, has been plunged into chaos following a last-minute row over gloves. Reports indicate that tensions flared after the official weigh-ins on Friday morning, with the American boxer even threatening to pull out of the contest.
Promoter Confirms Glove Issues Amidst Rising Tensions
Boxing promoter Kalle Sauerland addressed the situation, confirming that there are significant issues involving the gloves. "There was dramas. Those dramas are currently being resolved. This is not unchartered territory. There's some issues around the gloves, I can confirm that," he stated in an interview with iFL TV. Sauerland added that while the matter is being dealt with, it represents a major flash point, with both teams showing nerves ahead of the fight.
He emphasised that such controversies are not uncommon in big heavyweight bouts, noting, "It's also not the first time there has been a flare-up around big heavyweight fights and gloves. It's also not the first-time ever involving Deontay Wilder and gloves." Despite the drama, Sauerland expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved in time for the event.
Wilder's History with Glove Controversies Resurfaces
This incident is not the first time Deontay Wilder has been at the centre of glove-related disputes. Following his defeat to Tyson Fury in 2020, Wilder accused Fury of placing "something hard" in his gloves, though these allegations were later cleared. In 2021, ahead of their trilogy fight, Wilder raised concerns about the padding in Fury's gloves, which contained horse hair, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved them for use.
Wilder previously commented on such issues, saying, "If you haven’t put a glove on and hit someone in the face to understand what type of damage it could do, or how mechanically a glove can work, it’s 25, 30 years down the toilet." These past incidents highlight a pattern of scrutiny over equipment in his fights.
Fight Context and Stakes for Both Boxers
Derek Chisora, nicknamed 'War', is set to retire after this fight, marking his 50th professional bout regardless of the outcome. On the other hand, Deontay Wilder is on a redemption mission, aiming to prove he can still compete at the top level and has even called for a future showdown with Oleksandr Usyk. The two fighters had maintained a cordial relationship until this sudden dispute erupted.
The bout is available for fans to watch live on DAZN, with options to order via pay-per-view for £24.99 or access it free with the new DAZN Ultimate Tier. As the boxing world watches closely, the resolution of this glove issue will be critical to ensuring the fight proceeds as planned at the O2 Arena.
