Bearman Positive on Haas Ocon Exit as Camara Debut Looms

Oliver Bearman has reacted positively to Haas' decision to drop Esteban Ocon early, calling the situation an opportunity as Rafael Camara prepares to make his Formula One debut this weekend. The British driver expressed sympathy for his former team-mate but stressed the change could benefit the team.

Ocon Replaced Ahead of Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Ocon was removed from the car mid-weekend in Mexico, told to go home after second practice with Ryo Hirakawa filling in at short notice. Days later, ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Haas confirmed Ocon has been permanently sidelined and that Camara, already signed to replace the Frenchman next year, will get an early debut in Brazil.

Haas has not detailed what led to the drastic action, only confirming Ocon was not suffering from illness. The Frenchman issued a statement denying speculation in French media that he may have been involved in a physical altercation.

Bearman Sees Positive Side

Hirakawa finished 10th and scored a point on his F1 debut in Ocon's car, while Bearman said he was not put off by the change in the other side of the garage.

"Of course, it's strange not having Esteban here, and it's obviously a challenging situation for everybody. And I really, really feel for him. I really do feel for him, but, of course, the situation is complicated and things have changed," Bearman said.

"I just hope that it doesn't cause disruption. At least last week, I wouldn't say that it caused any disruption at all. So, if anything, it is positive now that we have Rafa in the car for these events and that is also preparing us as a team for next year."

Team Leader Role

Bearman, in his second full season in Formula One, is now the most experienced driver at Haas. He insists he is unfazed by the responsibility of being team leader, having already aimed for that role.

"Since the start of the year, I kind of was looking to move into a role of leading the team because I knew that, in the longer term, that would be how I become successful and how I move up in Formula 1," he said.

Being partnered with Camara presents a different challenge for Bearman. While Ocon was experienced and a race-winner, his seniority meant there was comparatively little pressure on the Brit to perform. Now, that has changed.

Ferrari Academy Rivalry

Both drivers are 21 years old, with Camara just three days older than Bearman, and both have Ferrari affiliation. They represent the top members of the Ferrari academy as the Scuderia works to develop a successor to Lewis Hamilton. Bearman has been regarded as the front-runner for that promotion, but that could change if Camara out-performs his team-mate at Haas.

"I'm not worried – I back myself as a driver, of course. Honestly, I'm excited to have a team-mate that's going to push me really hard," Bearman said. "For us, as competitive people, as racing drivers, you want someone that pushes you to the next level. And that's the best way to get the most out of the team, for sure."
