Fall and Immediate Response
Emergency services were alerted at around 1:30am after two men fell from a balcony at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise. Medical teams at the scene confirmed that Mr Silcox, 56, had died from his injuries. Mr Thomas, 54, was taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital on the island before being flown to the UK at the end of November.
Injuries and Deaths
Father-of-two Darren Silcox, from Cwmbran, died two hours after the fall. Family friend Nicholas Thomas, also from Cwmbran, was transferred to University Hospital in Llandough but died on July 10, nearly ten months after the incident.
Investigation and Inquest
Spain's Civil Guard has launched a probe into whether poor maintenance or inadequate safety measures contributed to the fatal accident. An earlier inquest into Mr Silcox's death found he died from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and skull lacerations. Gwent coroner Rose Farmer opened an inquest into Mr Thomas's death, noting the fall height between 15ft and 22ft after a wooden bannister collapsed. The proceedings have been adjourned until April 14 next year when a joint inquest is expected.
