Denis Shapovalov was forced to retire from his opening match at the Canadian Open in Montreal on Tuesday, telling his opponent Zachary Svajda: “Just my body is done.”
The world No. 43 arrived in Montreal in strong form after finishing runner-up in Los Cabos last week. However, trouble struck during the second set of his first-round match against Svajda.
Medical timeout and retirement
Shapovalov, a former semi-finalist at the event, was just two games from victory in the second set when Svajda won it 6-4 to force a decider. The 27-year-old then left the court for a medical timeout, appearing to have an issue around his groin or hip.
