Jarell Quansah was named among the substitutes for England's World Cup round of 32 clash against DR Congo but never actually changed into his kit, despite being listed on the official teamsheet. The Liverpool defender injured his ankle during England's previous match against Panama, a 2-0 victory in New Jersey, and was substituted off as a result.
Tuchel's Pre-Match Update on Quansah and James
England manager Thomas Tuchel had earlier indicated that both Quansah and Reece James would not be ready to feature against DR Congo. Speaking at his pre-match press conference in Atlanta on Tuesday, Tuchel said: "They are getting closer and closer. Jarell is a little bit ahead of Reecey. The race was close to even make it in the match squad for this time. We need to make sure we have more matches, that is the main focus, and then they will be available very soon."
Despite these comments, Quansah's name appeared on the substitutes' list, and he was seen walking on the pitch at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium before the game, suggesting he was part of the matchday squad. However, he remained in his training gear and watched the match from the bench alongside James, who was also injured.
England's Comeback Victory
England secured a 2-1 win over DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring a sensational brace to send the Three Lions into the last 16. The team fell behind early after Brian Cipenga fired past Jordan Pickford, but Kane's two goals ensured England progressed. Djed Spence started at right-back, England's problem position, and had a difficult spell, being involved in DR Congo's opener after being dragged across before Cipenga's strike.
Tuchel praised his team's mentality after the match, stating: "This team today did not accept defeat as an outcome. They just didn't accept it, and it makes me very proud because they did what was necessary. The going got tough today, and then they showed up, and we got the deserved win. We don't give in, we don't give in. That's what this team is about."
Quansah's Recovery Progress
There is hope that Quansah will be ready to return for England's next match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, though he is not expected to start. He has returned to light training on the grass, and there is optimism that he will rejoin full team training in Kansas City before the squad flies to Mexico City on Friday.
