Qatar's Madibo Banned Five Matches for Breaking Kone's Leg

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match ban by FIFA for a horror challenge that broke Canada midfielder Ismael Kone's leg during their World Cup group-stage match. The incident occurred in Qatar's 6-0 defeat to Canada on June 22, 2026, and left Kone with fractures in both his tibia and fibula bones in his left leg.

Madibo's Reaction and Aftermath

After the challenge, Madibo was seen crying on the pitch with his hands clasped behind his head as teammates comforted him. Players from both teams were visibly distraught. Kone, a Sassuolo midfielder, was immediately transferred to a hospital in Vancouver, where he underwent surgery. Madibo later visited Kone in hospital, and the two shared a picture together on social media.

FIFA Disciplinary Action

The FIFA disciplinary committee imposed the five-match suspension for serious foul play, with the decision subject to appeal. Madibo was left out of Qatar's final World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as his nation was already eliminated from the competition at the group stage.

Canada Manager's Account

Canada manager Jesse Marsch described the moment in horrific detail, saying he and his staff heard 'the bone snap' when Madibo's challenge went in. 'It happened right in front of the bench. We could all hear it. I knew right away,' Marsch said. 'Your heart goes out to [Kone], and everybody's a little shaken by the whole experience, because of the nature of the injury, and also because Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team. It will be a big loss for us. He's been an amazing player these last two games.'

Canada's World Cup Progress

Canada suffered a defeat in their final group game against Switzerland but still advanced to the knockout stages as group runners-up, despite losing Kone to injury.
