Nico Williams World Cup in Doubt After Horror Tackle

Spain forward Nico Williams has expressed fury after a horror tackle from Uruguay's Nicolas de la Cruz during Spain's 1-0 group-stage victory, casting doubt over his World Cup participation. The 23-year-old described the challenge as 'completely unnecessary' and shared an emotional statement on social media, calling it one of the worst days of his life.

Match Overshadowed by Ugly Incident

Spain secured top spot in Group A with a narrow win over Uruguay, courtesy of Alex Baena's first-half goal. However, the match was marred by a series of robust challenges as Uruguayan frustration boiled over following their early World Cup exit. De la Cruz, who replaced the injured Manuel Ugarte, cynically hacked at Williams during a Spanish counter-attack, leaving the Athletic Bilbao star in visible pain.

Williams took to social media with a black-and-white image of his angry reaction, writing: 'Today is one of the worst days of my life. I've been injured again after a very difficult year, in which pubalgia won many battles, but not the war. I managed to overcome it with hard work, sacrifice, and above all, responsibility.' He detailed a year and a half of suffering, sadness, and anxiety, struggling with pain even in simple daily activities.

Williams' Emotional Statement

In his post, Williams revealed the mental and physical toll of his ongoing injury battles. 'Being happy playing football again was my top priority, along with getting my smile back. Because without a smile, without enjoying it, and without being happy, I can't perform at my best. I overcame it. Then a hamstring injury appeared, which tested me again,' he wrote.

Regarding De la Cruz's tackle, Williams said: 'It was a play that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary. But this isn't going to stop me. I know God has a plan for me, and I will keep fighting until the very last moment to get back to doing what I love most: playing football, being happy, and bringing joy to others.'

Support from Teammates

Williams' international teammates quickly rallied behind him. Barcelona's Lamine Yamal offered emoji support, while Dani Olmo commented, 'Together, brother.' Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres, and Liverpool signing Victor Munoz also sent messages of encouragement. Munoz wrote: 'Stay strong, brother, we're with you!'

Injury Update

Despite the severity of the challenge, Spanish medical staff have confirmed that Williams sustained only an adductor injury, and his World Cup is not necessarily over. The team's doctors also reported that Yeremy Pino suffered a collarbone ligaments sprain, but both injuries are less serious than initially feared. Spain, one of the tournament favorites, will hope for a swift recovery for their star forward, who has been plagued by injury issues since his standout performances at Euro 2024.
