Jordan Henderson World Cup Over After Wrist Injury Requires Surgery
Jordan Henderson's World Cup Ends Due to Wrist Injury

Jordan Henderson's World Cup campaign has ended in heartbreak after the Brentford midfielder suffered a wrist injury that requires surgery, ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament. The 36-year-old was injured in the jubilant scenes following England's 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16, when he landed awkwardly after climbing over an advertising hoarding.

Injury Details and Immediate Aftermath

Henderson was seen lying on the pitch in significant distress, prompting teammate Dan Burn to urgently call for medical assistance. England players gathered around him as he was carried off the Estadio Azteca pitch on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. According to the Mirror, chief reporter John Cross said on the Make Football Great Again podcast: "Well, it feels like it might be [his World Cup over], to be honest. It's a wrist or arm injury which you can probably put in plaster, but as the team travels back to their base in Kansas City, Jordan Henderson is staying behind in Mexico City to have it set and repaired. It feels as if it's probably going to be his World Cup over. What an absolute hammer blow, so heartbreaking. He's such a good character and person and leader. I think that's absolutely devastating for him."

Confirmation of Surgery

The Athletic has confirmed that Henderson requires surgery to repair the damage, with one member of England's medical team remaining in Mexico City to stay with him. Henderson had not started the match against Mexico, remaining on the bench throughout, but he received a yellow card for dissent towards referee Alireza Faghani in the second half. His only appearance at this World Cup came in the closing stages of England's 2-0 win over Panama in the group stage, earning his 90th cap.

Manager and Teammate Reactions

England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his sadness after the game, stating: "I'm sad because Jordan injured his wrist. It's quite serious. He's in hospital. It doesn't fit with the rest of the evening. I don't know the procedure." Jude Bellingham, who scored twice against Mexico to send England into the quarter-finals, added: "He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I'm not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him."

Henderson's Return to the England Squad

Henderson was recalled to the England squad under Tuchel after being overlooked for Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad. Tuchel values his on-field experience and off-field leadership, having selected the former Liverpool captain for his first training camp in March 2026. Tuchel told ITV: "He embodies everything. He is a serial winner, his personality and character. He is the glue in every team that he has played, the glue that makes things special. I am convinced. If a teacher in a school is convinced about the quality of the class, the character of the class, it is better than the other way around."
