Jordan Henderson will miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a freak wrist injury during England's post-match celebrations following their 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The 36-year-old midfielder, an unused substitute, slipped while hopping over advertising hoardings and landed awkwardly on his arm, requiring immediate treatment and oxygen before being stretchered off.
Details of the injury
Henderson was taken to a hospital in Mexico City accompanied by a member of England's medical staff, while the rest of the squad returned to their base in Kansas City. Medical assessments confirmed he needs surgery on his wrist and will be sidelined for the remainder of the tournament. England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the severity in his post-match press conference: 'It's quite a serious injury. He's in hospital. It doesn't fit with the rest of the evening that Jordan is now not with us.'
Impact on England's squad
Although Henderson was unlikely to feature prominently in the knockout stages, his absence further depletes Tuchel's options ahead of the quarter-final against Norway in Miami. Reece James has missed three games with a hamstring injury, and defender Jarell Quansah is suspended after receiving a red card against Mexico. Tuchel expressed mixed emotions after the win, saying: 'It's a very special night for us. Mixed feelings because I am exhausted and emotional, but sad because Jordan injured his wrist.'
England secured their quarter-final spot thanks to a brace from Jude Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane. The Three Lions will now face Norway on Saturday in Miami.
