Apprentice Jockey Fighting for Life After Horrific Track Incident

A promising young apprentice jockey remains in critical condition following a devastating mid-race fall that has rocked New Zealand's racing community. Bailey Rogerson, 24, was placed in an induced coma after being dislodged from her mount Mandolo during Race 6 at Arawa Park near Rotorua on Sunday.

Stewards' Investigation Reveals Cause of Accident

Racing officials have suspended French jockey Corentin Berge for four weeks after their investigation concluded he allowed his mount to dangerously move out, eventually checking Rogerson's horse and causing the fall. The penalty represents one of the most significant bans issued in New Zealand racing this year.

Medical scans confirmed Rogerson suffered a fractured skull and neck injuries in the incident. Doctors at Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit immediately placed her in an induced coma due to concerns about intracranial pressure and potential brain bleeding.

Remarkably, the young jockey has shown movement in her limbs, providing a glimmer of hope for her recovery. Her family confirmed that sedation has been reduced and she briefly opened her eyes for about ten seconds on Tuesday morning - the first encouraging sign since the accident.

Family Maintains Vigil as Racing Community Rallies

Rogerson's family has maintained a constant presence at her bedside since she was airlifted to hospital. Her mother, Michelle Northcott, hasn't left her side according to legendary trainer Graeme Rogerson, Bailey's grandfather.

The Melbourne Cup-winning trainer told the New Zealand Herald: "She is in an induced coma but they are going to try to bring her out of that today. She has a fracture in her skull and there might also be a broken bone in her neck region. But she has movement in her limbs so that is good news."

Rogerson's fiancé, trainer Alex Forbes, has also remained with her as the family processes continuous medical updates and makes crucial healthcare decisions.

The incident occurred just hours after Rogerson celebrated her 58th career victory, guiding Burnished to success on the same race card. Known for her dedication to smaller stables, she has built a reputation for taking difficult rides that other jockeys often decline.

Hundreds of well-wishers have flooded social media with messages of support for the popular young rider. One supporter wrote: "Get well soon Bailey you come from tough stock girl," while others praised her resilience and dedication to the sport.

Fortunately, the horse involved in the incident, Mandolo, escaped serious injury. Witnesses reported the animal galloped away with only minor bruises and stiffness following the fall.
