Apprentice jockey Tom Prebble, who suffered spinal damage in a race fall at Warrnambool, Australia, has given a detailed update on his condition. The 23-year-old, son of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Brett Prebble, was airlifted to hospital after his mount Pulveriser fell three and a half furlongs from the finish.
In a statement, Prebble revealed he has been transferred from The Alfred Hospital ICU to the Austin Hospital ICU. He said his key injury is to his spinal cord, with no feeling or movement from the bottom of his rib cage down. Doctors have described it as a waiting game, with a full range of possible outcomes.
Prebble also suffered a fracture to his spine at T5 requiring surgery, a neck fracture needing a brace for three months, rib fractures, minor lung issues, and damage to his teeth. He expressed gratitude to medical staff and his family for their support.
He remains optimistic but realistic about recovery, stating that no one knows where things will land long-term. He plans to provide further updates as his situation changes.
