Jordan Henderson has thanked fans for their support after suffering a freak wrist injury during England's World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico. The 36-year-old midfielder was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament and is expected to undergo surgery.
Henderson's Injury During Celebrations
England secured a dramatic 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and Harry Kane converting a penalty. The result is considered one of England's greatest, given Jarell Quansah's red card and Mexico's formidable home record at high altitude. However, Henderson's injury marred the celebrations.
An unused substitute, Henderson was celebrating with fans when he toppled over an advertising hoarding behind the goal, landing awkwardly on his left arm. Dan Burn signaled for medical staff, and Henderson was stretchered off with oxygen before being taken to hospital.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the severity: "Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."
Henderson's Message and Teammate's Update
On Instagram, Henderson wrote: "A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."
England defender Marc Guehi provided an update on the Lion's Den programme: "Hendo's good. He's in a better place than he was yesterday. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to a speedy recovery."
England's Quarter-Final Against Norway
England face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 10pm BST at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. Guehi will be tasked with stopping Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals in the tournament. "I know he'll be up for it," Guehi said. "It'll be a challenge, but it's good to see some familiar faces and try and do our best and try and get a win. It's going to be fun."
The winner will face Argentina, Switzerland, or Colombia in the semi-finals.
