Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the World Cup after breaking his wrist in a fall over an advertising board during England's post-match celebrations following their 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16.
Injury during celebrations
The former Liverpool captain, an unused substitute in the match, was taken to hospital after the incident. Medical staff rushed to his aid shortly after the full-time whistle as England's players celebrated in front of their fans. Henderson was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the injury, saying: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Teammates react
Jude Bellingham, who scored twice in the match, told the BBC: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Henderson's tournament
Henderson had been booked during a fractious game over a confrontation on the sidelines. His sole appearance in the tournament came as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama.
Match summary
England beat Mexico with two goals from Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane, holding on to win after Jarell Quansah was sent off for catching Jesús Gallardo with his studs early in the second half.
