Jordan Henderson to Miss Rest of World Cup After Freak Wrist Injury
Henderson Out of World Cup After Freak Wrist Injury

Jordan Henderson is set to miss the remainder of England's World Cup campaign after being told he requires surgery on a freak wrist injury. The 36-year-old midfielder sustained the injury during celebrations following England's gritty 3-2 victory over Mexico in Mexico City.

How the Injury Happened

Henderson slipped and landed awkwardly while climbing over an advertising board after the match. He was seen lying on the turf in severe pain, with teammate Dan Burn quickly calling for medical assistance. England's players formed a barrier around Henderson, who was taken off the Estadio Azteca pitch on a stretcher and received oxygen.

He was taken to hospital and did not travel back to England's World Cup base in Kansas City. According to The Athletic, the Brentford star needs surgery to repair the injury, with one member of England's medical staff staying behind to accompany him in hospital.

Henderson's World Cup Involvement

Henderson was an unused substitute against Mexico, although he did receive a yellow card for dissent towards referee Alireza Faghani in the second half. His only appearance at this World Cup came during the latter stages of England's comfortable 2-0 victory over Panama in the group stage, which marked his 90th cap.

Reaction from the Camp

When asked about Henderson's injury post-match, England manager Thomas Tuchel said: "I'm sad because Jordan injured his wrist. It's quite serious. He's in hospital. It doesn't fit with the rest of the evening. I don't know the procedure."

Jude Bellingham, who scored twice against the co-hosts to help England reach the quarter-finals, added: "He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I'm not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him."

Henderson's Role Under Tuchel

Having missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2024, Henderson returned to the England setup under Tuchel, who values his experience on the pitch and leadership qualities off it. The former Liverpool captain was called up by Tuchel for the German's first camp last March.

Tuchel previously told ITV: "He embodies everything. He is a serial winner, his personality and character. He is the glue in every team that he has played, the glue that makes things special. I am convinced. If a teacher in a school is convinced about the quality of the class, the character of the class, it is better than the other way around."
