England midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to make a speedy recovery after fracturing his arm in a freak accident following the Three Lions' dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16. The 36-year-old former Liverpool captain suffered the injury while climbing over advertising boards at the Azteca Stadium, losing his footing and requiring oxygen before being stretchered off.
Henderson, who was an unused substitute in the match, was taken to hospital for treatment. He is likely to miss the remainder of the tournament and may need surgery, but he will remain with the England squad for the duration of their campaign.
Team-mate Provides Update
Speaking on the Lions' Den show, England defender Marc Guehi gave an update on Henderson's condition. Hendo's a good man, he's in a better place than he was yesterday,
Guehi said. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to a speedy recovery.
Guehi, who will face Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland in the quarter-finals, acknowledged the challenge ahead. It's going to be fun,
he said. I know he'll be up for it too. It'll be a challenge. It'll be good to see some familiar faces and we'll try to do our best and get a win.
Manager's Mixed Emotions
England manager Thomas expressed conflicting emotions after the victory. My emotions are very mixed,
he said. I'm just proud of the mentality and the attitude. Round of 32, round of 16 is the moment in tournaments where you find a way to win. We did it with pure mentality, with heart. We overcame every obstacle that was thrown at us.
He added: Mixed feelings also because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional, but also sad because Jordan got injured. He injured his wrist. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury. It just doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us.
England's victory was secured by a Harry Kane penalty and a double from Jude Bellingham, despite the team playing with 10 men. The Three Lions will face Norway in Miami on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.
Haaland's Form a Threat
Norway's Erling Haaland has scored seven goals in the tournament, including a brace against Brazil in the round of 16. Manchester City teammate Nico O'Reilly commented on the quarter-final: It's special and a great feeling [to reach the quarter-final]. But we haven't really got time for celebrating, we've got another tough game coming and every team is going to be tough, so we've got to be ready.
