Cardiff injury update: Salech and Colwill doubts for Blackburn

Cardiff City have issued a mixed injury bulletin ahead of Saturday's Championship fixture at Blackburn Rovers, with striker Yousef Salech a doubt and midfielder Rubin Colwill ruled out.

Salech picked up a shoulder injury during the Bluebirds' final game before the international break, the 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic. However, the striker has already returned to the pitch as he attempts to prove his fitness in time for the trip to Ewood Park.

Salech and Bielik updates

"He damaged his shoulder in that incident," said Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy. "He was back on the pitch on Tuesday and we just had to check on him. He hasn't trained with us yet, so he's back on the pitch but we'll see how he is today and then make a decision for Saturday after that."

There was better news elsewhere, with centre-backs Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish both available. Lawlor made a cameo appearance against Charlton, while Fish has recovered from a hernia operation slightly ahead of schedule.

"They're all good," Barry-Murphy said of the centre-backs. "The break has benefited them so they've trained all the time and they're good to go."

The positive update comes against the backdrop of Krystian Bielik's two-game suspension following an incident with a young fan at Fratton Park last month.

Chambers and Robertson assessments

Calum Chambers, however, remains some way from a return. The defender is still out of training and is due to see a specialist as Cardiff continue to assess his injury.

"Calum's not back in training. He's seeing a specialist today and then we'll know more about his injury after that, but he's not close," Barry-Murphy added.

Alex Robertson is another whose fitness must be assessed before Saturday. The midfielder withdrew from the Australia squad because of ongoing shin problems and a tight Achilles.

"He had some issues with his shins, he's had shin splints ongoing and a tight Achilles, so he wasn't fit to travel," Barry-Murphy said. "We don't think he'll train today but hopefully he'll be able to train tomorrow and be fit for Saturday."

Davies return and Colwill absence

Isaak Davies is set to return to full training after making the most of the international break. "Isaak's back in full training today and has done a lot of work during the international break," Barry-Murphy said.

Rubin Colwill, though, will miss Saturday's game as he continues his recovery from an ankle problem. "Rubin won't be fit for Saturday," the Cardiff boss confirmed. "This is the first week that he's starting to make really good progress, so hopefully he'll join in full training next week and then hopefully be back soon rather than later."

The Bluebirds are hopeful of carrying the momentum from their pre-break win into the next part of the season as they look to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. As things stand, Cardiff are fourth from bottom, despite showing some positive signs in the early stages of the campaign.

Barry-Murphy is under no illusions about the task ahead. "I think it's clear we need to do better. We are in a position at the table that we don't want to be, and our motivation and ambition is to improve that quickly," he added.
