Benjamin Sesko trained at Carrington on Tuesday morning ahead of Manchester United's opening day clash against Hull City this weekend. The centre-forward has missed all of United's pre-season fixtures this summer after being injured during the victory over Liverpool on May 3.
Sesko's return boosts United's attack
Sesko is expected to be United's main striker this season when available. In his absence, Bryan Mbeumo has led the line and scored a brace in the 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, plus the equaliser in the draw with Paris Saint-Germain. Joshua Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha have also played centre-forward as Michael Carrick weighed up his options.
De Ligt steps up recovery
Long-term absentee Matthijs de Ligt was also part of the training squad. He was pictured going through drills at Carrington last week and is stepping up his recovery ahead of his return to the team. The Dutch international last played for United in the 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace last year.
He was initially diagnosed with a small back problem. However, the problem eventually kept him out for the remainder of the campaign. Towards the end of last season, De Ligt underwent surgery to rectify the issue. Speaking at the time, he said: "Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football.
"I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible."
Mount remains a doubt
While United are buoyed by the inclusions of Sesko and De Ligt, they were once again without Mason Mount. Alongside Andrey Santos, Mount impressed in the early stages of pre-season but picked up an injury during the 1-1 draw with PSG.
After the game in Gothenburg, Mount told reporters he was 'all good'. However, he has since missed the games against Leeds and AC Milan, and his absence from training on Tuesday makes him a doubt to face Hull too.
Speaking after the game against PSG, Carrick said: "He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful."
