Liverpool's new centre-backs Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo both impressed in Sunday's friendly win over Como, providing relief and encouragement for supporters ahead of the new season.
There were concerns about whether either player would be right for the club, but both put in a really good shift, giving fans more confidence going into the weekend's opener.
Centre-back partnership shows promise
Although it was only a friendly, Jacquet and Araujo looked decent in their own way, and it is clear why they were brought to the club. There should be no worries whichever one starts at Newcastle.
Manager Andoni Iraola admitted last weekend that Liverpool lacked the fitness levels to sustain his approach for a full 90 minutes, echoing complaints from last season under Arne Slot.
Fitness and midfield concerns
Only the next few months will determine whether the players are equipped for the intense style last seen under Jurgen Klopp. These players are athletes, well-prepared, and should handle it.
Sunday was a step in the right direction, with Liverpool keeping things together for the full match and earning a much-needed clean sheet. Some players may be replaced for the final 20 minutes until they are up to speed, making the bench important for maintaining intensity.
There remains an obvious issue on the right of midfield, with no new right-winger signed. Lewis Koumas has had more minutes than anyone in that position during pre-season, and the manager clearly likes him.
Tribute to Kevin Keegan
Sunday's Premier League opener at Newcastle will be an emotional occasion, as the life and career of Kevin Keegan will be celebrated following his death last month at 75.
John Aldridge, writing in his column, recalled Keegan as one of his two heroes growing up as a Liverpool supporter, alongside Roger Hunt. He described both as brilliant people and real gentlemen.
Keegan's family will see how much he meant to supporters of both clubs, and Aldridge hopes the game is a fitting tribute.
