Furthermore, almost a third of coaches (31%) would welcome training to deliver nutritional advice, while only around one in seven (15%) feel comfortable offering guidance when asked by parents or players.

The research uncovered a significant expectation gap, with 27% of parents expecting coaches to possess nutritional know-how. This contrasts sharply with the mere 15% of coaches who feel confident providing such guidance. Ian Wright brings personal authenticity to the campaign, recalling his own dietary awakening under legendary Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger. "Until Arsene Wenger became Arsenal manager in 1996, I had no idea about food or how what I ate affected my performance," Wright revealed. "He changed everything for us, cutting down on fried food and salt, encouraging us to eat more protein, and getting us to take vitamins."

The former England striker emphasized that his early career was marked by poor eating habits, stating plainly: "I lived on fried food and salt." This personal history fuels his passion for the current initiative, which he believes can prevent today's young players from repeating his nutritional mistakes.

Wright has been visiting clubs alongside M&S Innovation & Development Chef Russell Goad, meeting coaches, parents, players and club chefs to understand their specific needs. "This isn't about just telling people to eat more vegetables or anything like that," Wright explained. "It's about practical help, like giving out M&S vouchers so the club can provide healthy snacks for players, and sharing healthy recipes that are easy to make for lots of people and that kids will actually eat."

The M&S team, which includes other ambassadors like former footballer Jill Scott, aims to nourish and energise grassroots players while providing clubs with actionable guidance for implementing healthier eating habits on both daily and weekly schedules.
