Carrick explains Martinez start for Man United vs Leeds
Carrick on Martinez start for Man United vs Leeds

Michael Carrick has reiterated that "what's done is done" when asked about Lisandro Martinez being selected to start for Manchester United against Leeds today.

Martinez criticism and apology

Martinez criticised the United hierarchy following the team's defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. The defender aimed his comments at Jason Wilcox, saying he expected more from the club in the transfer window.

Martinez released a statement on Wednesday explaining his remarks before holding talks with Omar Berrada, Wilcox and Carrick on Thursday. He apologised later that day for the timing of his comments but did not retract what he said.

Carrick's selection reasoning

Martinez starts for United against Leeds, and Carrick was asked by Sky Sports to explain his thinking behind the selection and whether starting Martinez had anything to do with the threat posed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

"Yeah, I said it whenever I did my press conference: what's done is done, we've moved on. We've picked a team, we know their threats, we've got some as well so we'll get the balance right," the United boss said.

Neville's view on the matter

On the threat Leeds carry, Carrick added: "Today is a fantastic game. We've come here to play well and try and win the game. It's a challenging place to come but it's a great game to be involved in."

After hearing from Carrick, Gary Neville said on the Martinez matter: "I'm torn a little bit. There should be some consequence but United don't have the depth and they can't afford for a bus to be driven through their dressing room, and it could have got worse. I think Carrick has handled it quite well."
