Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed the idea of an 'anti-Erling Haaland' plan ahead of the Selecao's World Cup last-16 clash against Norway on Sunday. Speaking at a press conference, Ancelotti insisted his side's focus is on containing Norway's well-drilled team rather than singling out the Manchester City striker.
Ancelotti on Team Strategy
"I don't think that there is such a thing as an 'anti-Haaland' plan," Ancelotti said. "I don't need to tell my players how to defend, they have faced each other a few times." He added that the team is in optimal condition but must continue improving. Ancelotti emphasized that Norway is a challenging team with good structure and organization, and Brazil must play at their best level to succeed.
Brazil's Road to the Knockout Stage
Brazil topped Group C and secured a spot in the last 16 with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan, courtesy of a stoppage-time goal from Gabriel Martinelli. The win set up a meeting with Norway at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The victor will face either England or co-hosts Mexico in the quarter-finals.
Key Players and Injuries
Brazil will be without midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who suffered a hamstring injury against Japan. However, Barcelona forward Raphinha could return after recovering from a thigh injury. Ancelotti expressed confidence in his squad's depth and readiness for the challenge.
Norway's Perspective
Norway coach Stale Solbakken acknowledged Brazil's formidable center-back partnership of Gabriel (Arsenal) and Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain), but stressed that the match is about more than individual duels. "Brazil has one of the best pairs of defenders in this tournament," Solbakken said. "There will be some tough duels between them and Erling, but it is more Brazil versus Norway for me." He added that Norway must be at their very best to have a chance against the favorites.
Team News
Solbakken expects Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson to be available after a thigh injury forced him off during the second Group I game against Senegal. Defender Holmgren Pedersen is being monitored after experiencing "coughing and rasping." Norway will look to Haaland to lead their attack, but Solbakken insists the team must perform collectively to overcome Brazil.
