10p Plastic Bag Trick to Keep Wasps Away from Gardens
10p Plastic Bag Trick to Keep Wasps Away from Gardens

As the UK warms up, wasps can become a major nuisance in gardens and homes. A social media gardening expert has shared a budget-friendly method to deter wasps from building nests, using a plastic bag and string.

Gardening enthusiast @gardening.with.ish demonstrated the trick, which involves folding a plastic bag inward to trap air, creating a cone-like shape, and tying it shut with string. The resulting fake wasp nest, when hung in a garden, tricks wasps into believing the territory is already claimed by another colony.

Wasps are highly territorial and will avoid areas they perceive as occupied. By hanging the plastic bag near a shed or tree, homeowners can encourage wasps to nest elsewhere, reducing aggression while still allowing them to pollinate plants.

The expert recommends using a black bin bag, burlap sack, or empty compost bag. Plastic bags are available from supermarkets for as little as 10p. Spring is the ideal time to deploy this method, as larger wasps begin to emerge.

Ish added: 'As a result, your home will be protected, your plants will still be pollinated, and you didn't use a single chemical.'
