The political and sporting worlds could be set for a dramatic collision, as Donald Trump's luxury Irish golf resort has emerged as a surprise frontrunner to host the 2025 Irish Open.
Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, County Clare, is understood to be on a shortlist of potential venues for the prestigious DP World Tour event. The news has sent ripples through the golfing community, not least for its potential to attract significant global attention—and controversy.
McIlroy's Measured Response
World number two Rory McIlroy, a former winner of the tournament, was questioned on the prospect during a press conference. The Northern Irish star offered a characteristically diplomatic, if slightly bemused, response.
"I haven't heard that, but I'm sure it would be controversial," McIlroy stated. He went on to acknowledge the quality of the destination, separating the golf from the politics: "It's a great golf course... It's a great resort, it's a great place. I think they get good support there. I think it would be fantastic."
A Venue Steeped in Controversy
The potential selection is fraught with complexity. The former US President's property has been a flashpoint for debate in Ireland, particularly concerning its coastal erosion defences. Hosting a flagship national sporting event there would inevitably draw focus away from the golf and onto the polarising figure of Trump himself.
Golf Ireland, the governing body, faces a delicate decision. While the Doonbeg resort offers world-class facilities capable of hosting a tour event, the commercial and reputational implications of aligning with Trump are immense. The tournament would be guaranteed unprecedented media coverage, though not all of it focused on the sport.
The Road to 2025
A final decision on the host venue is expected in the coming months. The 2024 Irish Open is scheduled for the spectacular Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. Choosing Doonbeg for the following year would represent a stark and audacious contrast, ensuring the 2025 championship would be one of the most talked-about events in recent golfing history.
