Team Europe reportedly ran up a £230,000 bar bill celebrating their Ryder Cup victory over the USA at Bethpage Black in New York. The players, support staff, and families marked the win with champagne and other drinks on Sunday night.
According to reports, the tab included £116,000 on 120 bottles of Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial champagne at £967 each, plus £74,000 on 60 bottles of Moët MCIII and the same amount of Moët Rosé Champagne. A further £18,000 went on Belvedere Vodka, and over £22,000 on ten bottles of limited-edition Hennessy 250th Anniversary cognac. Players were also offered a special Hennessy Richard Lunar New Year 2025 cognac, retailing at nearly £15,000.
Shane Lowry, who sank the winning putt, acknowledged on social media: 'I might have a hangover.' During a post-session press conference, the team debated who would stay out latest, with Tyrrell Hatton and Lowry both pointing to Austrian Sepp Straka as the likely last man standing.
Captain Luke Donald said: 'We'll have some fun.' The celebrations included a rendition of 'Are you watching Donald Trump?' filmed by Rory McIlroy. Trump replied on social media: 'Yes, I'm watching. Congratulations!' Donald told the BBC: 'We were having a moment together with the team, and Rory got a text from the president.'
McIlroy also addressed the abuse he and his wife Erica faced from the crowd, saying: 'Families should be off-limits... I don't think we should ever accept that in golf.' He added that Erica handled the situation 'with class and poise and dignity.'
