Phil Mickelson has been made to regret a confident remark he made to LIV Golf ally Henrik Stenson ahead of the 2016 Open Championship. The American had predicted that Stenson would win the major, only for the Swede to defeat him in a thrilling final round at Royal Troon.
Before the tournament, Mickelson told Stenson: “Henrik, you’re one of the best long iron players in the game's history. The best I’ve ever seen. You’re going to win your major.” Stenson started the final day with a one-shot lead and carded a 63, while Mickelson shot a 65, setting up a dramatic showdown. The pair were deadlocked through 13 holes before Stenson pulled away with ten birdies, including a crucial one on the 18th, to finish at 20 under par—a record low score in a major championship.
Mickelson, despite firing a 65, could not catch Stenson, who claimed his first major title. The duel was likened to the “Duel in the Sun” between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus in 1977. For Mickelson, it was another near-miss, but he has since won six majors, including the 2013 Open where he defeated Stenson by three strokes.
The 2024 Open Championship is scheduled for July 18-21, with both Mickelson and Stenson set to compete.
