Rory McIlroy skips Mexico Open to focus on DP World Tour finale
Rory McIlroy skips Mexico Open for DP World Tour

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy will not compete at the Mexico Open this weekend, with the Northern Irishman's absence explained by a combination of the PGA Tour calendar, his reduced tournament schedule and a focus on the DP World Tour's season finale.

Why McIlroy is skipping the Mexico Open

The PGA Tour wrapped up its primary competitive season and FedEx Cup Playoffs in August, making late-season events optional for top-ranked players like McIlroy. Because of this calendar shift, most of golf's biggest names are skipping the Mexico Open to rest rather than chase supplementary FedEx Cup Fall points.

McIlroy has also stated a firm desire to reduce his total appearances, saying he's "not getting any younger" as he seeks to protect his body and recover. That deliberate pull-back directly translates to skipping non-signature events like the Mexico Open to maintain longevity and avoid burnout.

DP World Tour priority and next appearance

Rather than travelling to Mexico, McIlroy is prioritising the European circuit as he seeks to capture another season-long championship. After recent overseas appearances, he noted, "I love playing over here," reinforcing that his competitive energy in the autumn is focused outside the U.S.

With a secure exemptions status, top-tier world ranking points and major championship entries locked in for next year, McIlroy has no competitive incentives to play a standard Fall Series event. He deliberately structures his campaign around major championships and signature events, keeping unmandatory international stops off his calendar.

Rest and recovery plans

McIlroy routinely takes multi-week training and recovery blocks during late autumn to reset his swing and spend time with his family. Skipping Mexico provides him the necessary training runway to stay sharp without adding international travel fatigue to his off-season regimen.

The DP World Tour resumes on November 5 with the Abu Dhabi Championship at Yas Links. McIlroy is expected to be among those set to compete in the UAE before turning his attention to the Tour Championship in Dubai.
