Rory McIlroy to Assess Schedule After Players Championship Finish

Rory McIlroy has announced that he will carefully evaluate his physical condition and upcoming schedule following a tie for 46th place at the Players Championship. The world No 2 golfer, who was the defending champion at TPC Sawgrass, faced challenges due to a back injury that impacted his preparation for the event.

Injury and Performance Impact

McIlroy revealed that his back injury significantly hampered his performance leading up to the tournament. Despite this setback, he managed to compete through all four days, expressing satisfaction with his body's resilience. "It was important to make the weekend here and play an extra couple of days," McIlroy stated. "I'm happy I got through four days and my body feels good."

He noted that while his game showed gradual improvement over the week, the scores did not fully reflect this progress during the weekend rounds. "My game got a little bit better as the week went on, even though the scores probably didn't reflect it over the weekend," he added.

Future Plans and Masters Preparation

Looking ahead, McIlroy emphasized that his immediate focus will be on monitoring his health and practice regimen. "I'll see how my body feels," he said. "We'll see how I feel in practice and at home and if I get itchy feet at home maybe add an event at some point."

He plans to resume a full practice schedule, including gym work, to assess how his body responds. "See how the next week goes, see how once I get back to a full practice schedule and in the gym and stuff like that, see how my body reacts to that, and then I'll see," McIlroy explained. This evaluation will be crucial as he prepares for the defence of his Masters title next month.

The decision on whether to participate in additional events before the Masters remains pending, based on his physical recovery and training outcomes. McIlroy's approach highlights the importance of health management in professional sports, especially with major tournaments on the horizon.
