Rory McIlroy Aims for 'Free' Mindset in Masters Final After Lead Slips
Rory McIlroy is targeting a "free" state of mind for the final round of the Masters, despite acknowledging he must improve significantly to retain the Green Jacket. The defending champion saw his six-stroke advantage vanish during the third round, leaving him tied with Cameron Young at the top of the leaderboard. McIlroy struggled visibly, carding a one-over par 73, but remains optimistic about his chances.
McIlroy Reflects on Performance and Strategy
McIlroy expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back, drawing on his victory at the same venue in 2025. "I'd like to think that I'll play a little bit freer and I'll play, like I've already got a Green Jacket, which I do," he said. "Sometimes I maybe just have to remind myself of that. The pairing will be just a little bit easier, the atmosphere out there will be a little bit easier." He added that while he wishes he were in a better position, he feels comfortable heading into the final day.
After media duties, McIlroy headed straight to Augusta National's driving range to address swing issues, noting shots missed both left and right during round three. "There's a long way to go," McIlroy stated. "This golf course has a way of, when you're not quite feeling it, you struggle. You have to dig deep and I felt like I did that on the front nine and made a lot of good par saves. I just know I need to be better tomorrow to have a chance." He emphasized focusing on keeping his lower body moving through impact to correct his form.
Cameron Young's Perspective and Challenge
Cameron Young, who shot an impressive 65 in the third round, is aiming to replicate McIlroy's recent feat of winning the Players Championship and Masters in quick succession. However, Young downplayed the historical parallel, stating, "That guarantees me absolutely nothing moving forward. I'm owed nothing. My past results don't dictate what I do tomorrow." He stressed the importance of attacking the final round with the same intensity as previous days.
The stage is set for a thrilling conclusion at Augusta, with both players tied and under pressure to deliver. McIlroy's experience as a past champion could prove crucial, but Young's recent form poses a significant threat. Golf fans worldwide will be watching closely to see if McIlroy can reclaim his lead or if Young will secure a breakthrough victory.
