England legend Emile Heskey has offered crucial World Cup advice to Thomas Tuchel's side, urging them to ignore outside noise as they prepare for the knockout stages. Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport, the former Liverpool striker, who earned 62 caps for England across two World Cups, shared his insights on handling the intense media scrutiny that comes with representing the Three Lions on the biggest stage.
Heskey's Pride in Representing England
"It's an incredible feeling," Heskey admitted. "I always say that even if I'd only ever played once for England, I would still have been immensely proud!" His first call-up came at Under-16 level, and he went on to play for the senior team at four major tournaments. "Just wearing the England shirt meant everything. To go on and play for the senior team, appear at four major tournaments and have my family there watching me was something incredibly special," he said.
Lessons from the 'Golden Generation'
Heskey was part of England's so-called 'Golden Generation', which included stars like David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard. The team was tipped to go far at the 2002 World Cup, but their dreams ended with a moment of magic from Brazil's Ronaldinho, who scored a famous free-kick over David Seaman. Heskey noted the quality of opposition: "Brazil had players like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, while France had Thierry Henry and plenty of other world-class players. We talk a lot about our Golden Generation, but those teams were probably even stronger!"
Advice for Tuchel's Squad
With England tipped to go far in North America, Heskey urged the current crop to follow his lead regarding outside noise. "I've never really listened to all that outside noise, so I didn't pay much attention to it," he said. His advice comes as Thomas Tuchel's side have made it to the last 16 of the tournament.
Heskey's Surprise Ringer Appearance
Heskey was back playing football recently when Cockney Violets were left short following a last-minute dropout ahead a top division clash at Powerleague Vauxhall. He stepped in as a surprise ringer as part of Powerleague's 'World Cup Ringers' campaign. The campaign was launched in response to research showing that 84% of 5-a-side players have scrambled for a last-minute replacement. Powerleague has launched a 'Ringerz' WhatsApp community across all 44 clubs to connect players with teams needing last-minute replacements.
