Tommy Fleetwood Expresses Relief as Family Safely Returns to UK from Dubai
World No 3 golfer Tommy Fleetwood has spoken of his profound relief after his family successfully returned to England from Dubai, where they had been residing for four years, amidst ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Fleetwood family, including his wife Clare, son, and two stepsons, landed back in the UK on Wednesday evening, following a challenging period marked by flight cancellations and uncertainty.
Emotional Toll and Focus on Golf
Fleetwood, who is currently competing at the Players Championship in Florida, admitted that the situation had been weighing on his mind, though he emphasised his family's safety as the top priority. "Of course, it is difficult not being able to travel. That has obviously been difficult," Fleetwood said after shooting a fine three-under par 69 at Sawgrass. "But when you know they're fine, that's kind of a relief." He added that Clare, his wife, is very relieved now and feels good, highlighting the unsettling nature of the times for many people in the region.
The Fleetwoods were among tens of thousands of Britons attempting to leave the United Arab Emirates, with passenger flights grounded for days. "It wasn't easy," Fleetwood recounted. "They had one flight that was cancelled or suspended. And then they got lucky getting out because they got out on the flight and then I think something happened at the airport while they were in the air or something. So they got lucky timing wise." Despite the difficulties, he praised the nation's leaders for making everyone feel safe and protected.
Strong Performance at the Players Championship
Amid the personal turmoil, Fleetwood delivered a stellar performance on the course, making four birdies and an eagle in his opening round. He enjoyed a golden run over a notoriously difficult stretch at Sawgrass, including an eagle at the 16th and birdies on the next two holes, reaching the turn in 32. Although three bogeys marred his back nine, the 35-year-old was content with his day. "I played solidly and hit a lot of good shots," he said, demonstrating his ability to maintain focus under pressure.
Other Golfers in the Spotlight
The tournament also saw notable performances from other top players. Rory McIlroy, despite pre-tournament concerns about a back injury that caused him to withdraw from last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational, started strongly by driving 330 yards down the fairway on the 1st tee. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler had a low-key start with a level-par 72, expressing hope to improve over the coming days. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas, recovering from back surgery in late 2025, shot a 68, marking a welcome return to prominence as he rebuilds confidence in competition.
Fleetwood's family is expected to join him before an upcoming PGA Tour stop in Texas, providing further reassurance as he continues his season. This episode underscores the personal challenges athletes face beyond the sport, with Fleetwood's resilience shining through both on and off the course.
