England's Matt Fitzpatrick defeated world number one Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage for the second time. Fitzpatrick held a three-shot lead going into the final round at Hilton Head and still led by three standing on the 15th tee, but Scheffler birdied the 15th and 16th holes while Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 18th after a poor chip, forcing a playoff.
In the playoff, Fitzpatrick hit a superb four-iron approach shot to 12 feet and rolled in the birdie putt for victory after Scheffler had missed the green with his second and chipped to eight feet. Fitzpatrick described the shot as 'out of this world' and said the win was special, especially going 'toe-to-toe' with Scheffler.
Fitzpatrick, from Yorkshire, told CBS: 'It was a lot of grit. I knew Scottie was going to make some birdies down the stretch and I kind of had to hang in there a little bit.' The victory was his fourth PGA Tour title and second in 28 days, following his win at the Valspar Championship last month.
Fitzpatrick said the RBC Heritage is close to his heart because he holidayed at Hilton Head with his family as a child. He evoked memories of Rory McIlroy's dramatic Masters victory the previous week, joking with his caddie Dan Parratt about McIlroy's caddie Harry Diamond after failing to win in regulation.
