Brook and Jacks lead England into Pakistan tri-series with World Cup in sight
Brook and Jacks lead England into tri-series with World Cup in sight

England's one-day international side, under captain Harry Brook and coach Brendon McCullum, has won three consecutive series this year, and the focus now shifts to a tri-series in Pakistan as the 50-over World Cup approaches.

Young guns for T20s, serious business in ODIs

The 20-over squad includes 18-year-old Thomas Rew, who could become the third-youngest man to play for England, and 21-year-old Eddie Jack, who has seven T20 caps. Both will tour Australia next month but were not selected for the ODI leg, underlining the priority placed on the 50-over format with the World Cup less than a year away.

After a poor run that included a failed World Cup defence in late 2023 and a winless Champions Trophy in early 2025, England have rebounded. All three series wins this year went to deciders, and on each occasion England posted 350-plus totals, applying scoreboard pressure as they did under Eoin Morgan.

Tri-series in Pakistan

England begin their campaign on Tuesday in Rawalpindi against Sri Lanka, with Pakistan also in the competition. Pakistan recently lost a Test series in England but have won three consecutive home series in white-ball cricket, including a 2-1 win over an under-strength Australia in June, where 231 was the highest total in three matches on turning pitches.

Brook returns to a country where he has scored four Test hundreds, including a triple, and previously won the Pakistan Super League with Lahore Qalandars. The most intriguing player in England's white-ball setup is Will Jacks, once an opener and now their established finisher, who is also England's leading wicket-taker in ODIs this year with his off-breaks.

Jacks and the spin options

Jacks made his international debut four years ago in Pakistan but was in and out of the side until Brook, a former England Under-19s roommate, gave him a middle-order role. Jacks showed patience with an unbeaten 46 and a five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street last month.

He will bowl alongside Adil Rashid, with Mason Crane also in contention after a revival at Glamorgan earned him an England development contract. Rehan Ahmed has been omitted. James Coles and Henry Crocombe are the two uncapped picks, with Crocombe receiving a two-year central contract before his international debut.

Jofra Archer has been rested, while Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler are missing through injury. In the deciding ODI against Sri Lanka at the Oval, replacements Tom Banton scored his first international century and Jordan Cox made a rapid 76. Banton, 27, and Cox have had false starts but are now settling at this level.

England have at least 20 ODIs before their opening World Cup match against Bangladesh in Namibia next year. The kids are in for the T20s, but the 50-over game is a grown-up show for now.
