Wrexham's relatively low-spending January transfer window could pave the way for a more aggressive summer, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley. The Welsh club, backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, spent around £5 million on three new players in the winter window, a significant drop from the £33 million splashed out last summer after promotion to the Championship.
Dr Plumley, a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, said the change in approach could prove crucial in navigating the English Football League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). He told Covers.com: 'Wrexham have almost got a three-year hit at the Championship if they choose to go down that road and I think they will do given the owners and backing.'
The January signings included defender Zak Vyner from Bristol City for £1.5 million, attacking midfielder Davis Keillor-Dunn from Barnsley for £2.5 million, and young forward Bailey Cadamarteri from Sheffield Wednesday for £1 million. Dr Plumley noted that bringing in younger talents for lower fees 'might prove smart business' and could set up a more aggressive summer window.
Wrexham currently sit sixth in the Championship with 16 games remaining, and face fifth-placed Millwall at home on Saturday in a crucial play-off clash. Dr Plumley added: 'It's clear where their aspirations are and they've got a couple of years to try and build that. It comes with risk attached and their owners have got to be in it for the long haul as well.'
However, he sounded a note of caution about the club's push for the Premier League, warning: 'What happens if you don't get up in three years? I think that's where the losses will come into sharper focus.' Despite this, he believes the combination of owner funding and rising revenues leaves Wrexham well placed to be bold again in the summer.
