Wrexham head into the final day of the Championship season clinging to the last play-off spot, with promotion to the Premier League and an estimated £100 million windfall on the line. The Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club sit sixth, tied on points with seventh-placed Hull City but holding a slender goal difference advantage of +4 to +3.
Should Wrexham and Hull finish level on both points and goal difference, the tie would be broken by goals scored – currently 68 for Hull against 67 for Wrexham. If that also proves equal, head-to-head record would decide the outcome, which would favour Hull after they completed the league double over the Red Dragons.
Derby County remain in contention, just one point behind but boasting a superior goal difference of +9. All three clubs face final-day opponents: Wrexham host Middlesbrough, who still harbour faint automatic promotion hopes; Hull entertain Norwich City; and Derby welcome Sheffield United. The matches all kick off simultaneously at 12:30pm on Saturday.
Wrexham have stumbled recently with defeats to Southampton, Birmingham and Coventry, but director Shaun Harvey insists the season is already a success regardless of the outcome. “To use Alex Ferguson’s favourite phrase, it definitely is squeaky bum time,” Harvey said. “But there’s a story to be written either way.”
