Wrexham's Hollywood co-owners have been cautioned against overspending in the January transfer window, with football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley warning that a big outlay could breach the EFL's profit and sustainability rules (PSR). The Red Dragons, backed by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, spent nearly £33m on new signings last summer to build a Championship squad.
Phil Parkinson's side currently sit ninth in the table, just two points off the play-off positions, raising hopes of an unprecedented fourth consecutive promotion. However, Dr Plumley, a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, advised against short-term spending sprees. He said: 'I don't expect Wrexham will spend big in this window, in truth. For Wrexham, this season represents the start of a three-to-five-year building block platform.'
The club have yet to make any January additions but are expected to be active late in the window. Dr Plumley noted that a short-term strategy risks falling foul of PSR, especially with the EFL potentially moving to a squad cost ratio model. He added: 'This is all a little bit up in the air at the moment, so it does present a tricky landscape for clubs in the Championship right now.'
Despite the caution, Dr Plumley acknowledged Wrexham's strong commercial position, underpinned by major sponsorships since the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary. He said: 'What Wrexham already have been able to do positively is boost revenue significantly through commercial deals. This needs to continue to give them the best possible chance of catching up clubs in receipt of Premier League parachute payments.'
Wrexham's play-off hopes suffered a minor setback on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City, after a late equaliser from Jannik Vestergaard. They travel to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday for their next Championship fixture.
