Florian Wirtz has admitted he thought he was offside for his controversial goal in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage. The German international brought Liverpool level just before the hour mark after Harry Wilson had given Fulham the lead in the first half.
Despite replays appearing to show Wirtz in an offside position when Conor Bradley played the pass, the goal was awarded following a VAR review. Wirtz confessed he did not celebrate initially because he was convinced it would be disallowed. 'I was sure it was offside so I didn't even celebrate,' he said. 'I was happy that I scored but I'd rather take the three points.'
Liverpool thought they had won it when Cody Gakpo scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Harrison Reed's stunning 30-yard strike three minutes later snatched a point for Fulham. Wirtz expressed his frustration at the result, saying: 'Not satisfied at all. We need points and we wanted three points today.'
Reds boss Arne Slot also lamented the late equaliser, describing Reed's effort as 'unbelievable'. He said: 'It's not for the first time this season that we have conceded in the final seconds of the game. So many points have disappeared for us.'
Wirtz, who joined Liverpool in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen, admitted the team must improve, saying: 'We have to get better but it's still a process.' He also praised the intensity of Liverpool's second-half performance, which saw them create several chances.
