Wirtz Responds to Critics After First Liverpool Goal

Florian Wirtz has broken his Liverpool duck with a goal in the 2-1 win over Wolves, and the German midfielder has sent a pointed message to his doubters. The 22-year-old, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million, scored a calm finish after good work from fellow summer recruit Hugo Ekitike.

After the match, Wirtz posted on Instagram with a series of images, choosing the song 'Made For This S***' by American rapper Gunna, seemingly addressing the intense pressure surrounding his big-money move. He captioned the post with a red heart emoji, receiving support from teammates including Ibrahima Konate, who responded with a zipped-mouth emoji.

Speaking after the game, Wirtz said: 'It was very nice, the feeling on the pitch with the fans around, I was very happy. I was confident that I would score one day, I wanted to start scoring and assisting earlier but it was like this, I have to accept it but I just knew that it would come and I had to keep going.'

The goal comes after a difficult start to life in the Premier League, with pundits including Gary Neville questioning his impact. After Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in November, Neville said Wirtz 'looked like a little boy' and called his performance 'a real worry'. Wirtz has now scored his first goal and registered his first Premier League assist, setting up Alexander Isak against Tottenham.
