Why Willy Kambwala left Man United for Como explained

Willy Kambwala could line up against Manchester United when the Red Devils face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The centre-back left Old Trafford in 2024, and his departure was shaped by several key factors.

Contract Renewal Rejection

The main driver behind Kambwala's move to Villarreal in 2024 was his decision to turn down a new contract proposal from Manchester United. With only one year remaining on his existing deal, the young defender felt it was time to seek fresh opportunities rather than commit his long-term future to Old Trafford. His refusal left the club with little choice but to move him on to avoid losing him as a free agent.

First-Team Ambitions and Strategic Profit

Having made 10 first-team appearances in the previous season, Kambwala was eager to secure regular starter minutes to further his development. He recognised that stiff competition and potential defensive additions at United would relegate him to a fringe option, whereas relocating provided a clear path to consistent playing time.

From Manchester United's perspective, selling Kambwala generated financial gain from an academy prospect before his contract expired. The agreement secured an initial transfer fee of €5.5m (£4.6m), which could rise to €11.5m (£9.6m) with performance-based add-ons.

Positive Departure and Farewell Message

Despite turning down the contract extension, Kambwala left with great respect and expressed gratitude toward the coaches, staff and teammates who aided his path from the academy. In a post shared on Instagram, he wrote: “Dear Manchester United, I arrived at the club as a boy with a dream and today I’m leaving like a young man who has fulfilled his dream. From the academy to the first team, it’s time for me to start a new adventure after wonderful seasons at the club. Thank you to all the people I have met during these years. Coaches, my teammates, staff members, workers in Carrington and members of my host family. I’ll never forget what you all did for me. A special thank you to you fans who have always supported me, you are the soul of this club. I wish you the best for this season and for the future.”

Safety Clauses in the Transfer

Although United allowed the young defender to move on, they negotiated safety nets in the transfer structure. The final deal included a sell-on percentage alongside a three-year buy-back option. United ultimately chose not to exercise the buy-back option when he moved to Como on loan last summer, but they will bank a small fee should the Italians exercise their non-mandatory purchase option of around £8.5m.
