Former West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd was assaulted at Marseille Provence Airport on Sunday night, according to French reports. The 29-year-old, who recently joined Olympique de Marseille, was preparing to fly out for international duty with Morocco when the incident occurred.
Reports from BFM Marseille-Provence state that a man approached Aguerd in the VIP lounge, asking for his phone number and a selfie. The situation escalated when the individual raised his voice and attempted to slap the player. Security staff intervened swiftly, and the man was detained by police.
Aguerd did not file a formal complaint before departing to join his Morocco teammates. The Atlas Mountains face Bahrain in a friendly on Thursday before a World Cup qualifier against Congo. Morocco have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup with a perfect record in qualifying.
The centre-back joined Marseille for around £20 million in the summer transfer window, after spending the previous season on loan at Real Sociedad. He made 61 appearances for West Ham, scoring four goals and winning the 2023 Europa Conference League.
Marseille are currently second in Ligue 1, one point behind Paris Saint-Germain. They resume their campaign after the international break with a home match against Le Havre, followed by Champions League fixtures against Sporting Lisbon, Newcastle United and Liverpool.
